A knowledge-based society is a society wherein information becomes effective in action – taking decisions, underpinning initiatives, etc.. Today’s emerging knowledge-based society is one the building blocks of which are primarily various forms of digitized information.

The early infancy of this information-based society appeared with Claude Shannon’s Theory of Mathematical Information (1949) and the invention of the transistor by Robert Noyce (1958). Then came an period when continuous streams of information began, with CNN (1980), the creation of the Web (1989), the acceptance of a common protocol of planetary communication, the Internet (1995), and today’s early experiences with continuous expressions of opinion circulated on and in social networks (2004).
