In 1950, Michel Cartier began working as a typographer and printer.

In 1970, he began working in television as a choreographer and director.

He was also the founder and director of the Ensemble national des Feux-follets.

In 1980, he was a pioneer in microcomputing, vice-president of the Apple Education Foundation and director of the telematics laboratory at UQAM.

In 1990, he founded the RVTI (Réseau de veille sur les technologies d’information), which has since become the ConstellationW network; he is also a consultant to various institutions and governments in different countries.



A graduate of the Institut des arts graphiques de Montréal and professor in the Communications Department at UQAM from 1975 to 1997, Michel Cartier has taught television and multimedia. He was a consultant for various institutions, both in Europe and in America, in the field of new information technologies and their impact on language and culture. He has participated in the implementation of the Plato, Telidon and Internet networks and has explored distance learning, e-government, electronic publishing and the creation of new media writing.

Icons on the screen

An icon is a sign displayed on the screen that is used for navigation. The first ones appeared around 1972, then, with the arrival of microcomputers, the Web and mobile devices, they have multiplied to such an extent that we will soon have to tackle the challenge of iconic grammars.

An iconic grammar is a process of conjugating different icons in the same interactive system. It is therefore a cultural process that involves interactivity, cognitive ergonomics and user literacy (training).

Cartier’s research in this field began in 1991 and a first text was published in 2004 at the Laboratoire de télématique de l’UQAM. It has since been republished as a 111-page PDF document.

It is still relevant today.

La veille intégrée

Integrated monitoring

Integrated intelligence combines economic intelligence (industrial espionage, for example), technological intelligence (intelligence) and societal intelligence (analysis of behavior and surveys). It is linked to the development of innovation strategies capable of offering scenarios enabling institutions to adapt to the changes underway.

Several events gave it a strong impetus towards the year 2000: globalization following the collapse of the USSR, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the emergence of the Web, the maneuvers of the American army (Mogadisciu, Kuwait, etc.) and the development of various types of satellites. Professionals in the field soon formed an association to standardize their practices. A new industry literally took shape. The group was formed around SCIP, Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals, which brings together more than 15,000 members, most of them American.

This document was written in 2003 to provide a synthesis of practices in the various fields and edited at the Laboratoire de Télématique de l’UQAM. It has recently been found and republished as a 92-page PDF document.
