Several authors have described the last three major societal shifts :

The transition

(Also called rupture, big tipping point and techtonic powers shifts by some authors).

The knowledge-based society has begun to emerge and settle into place during the transitional period that began (approximately) in the year 2000, at least in North America. This framing or mental model is biased. Historically, a society’s growth and stability has relied on the shared dream of all its citizens and has operated via a system that supported information exchanges between the citizenry (printing, television and now the Internet, for example).

Today we are not currently experiencing an economic recession, but rather a cultural reorganization that requires significant changes in behavior on the part of all citizens and their leaders. We are becoming less and less a society of classes (or markets to Adam Smith or Karl Marx). We are on our way towards something else, both individually and collectively.

If the industrial society produced objects, the new knowledge-based society will above all create relations between the citizens.

Our horizon is blocked ; the impending gloom has brought industrial society on its knees. And, it is blasphemy in certain circles to want to replace the current neoliberal model :
